On the LDS Church’s website mormonsandgays.org, there is a statement that reads, “Where the Church stands: The experience of same-sex attraction is a complex reality for many people. The attraction itself is not a sin, but acting on it is. Even though individuals do not choose to have such attractions, they do choose how to respond to them. With love and understanding, the Church reaches out to all God’s children, including our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters.” On this episode guest contributors Greg Harris and John Gustav-Wrathall join podcast regulars Lisa Tensmeyer Hansen and Kendall Wilcox in exploring the meaning and implications of this statement. They reflect on how different lesbian, gay, bisexual, and same-sex attracted Mormons deal with the ideas expressed in the statement.
Greg Harris is the incumbent President of North Star, a peer-led, community-driven organization—a grass-roots effort with a mission to empower Latter-day Saint individuals and families concerned with issues of sexual or gender identity to more authentically, healthily and joyfully live the gospel of Jesus Christ.
John Gustav-Wrathal is the President of Affirmation which is a nonprofit organization that works for the understanding and acceptance of gays and lesbians as full, equal and worthy persons within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and society, and to help them realize and affirm self-worth.
